Tests completed
I bought a couple 85 mm sloyd blades from @focusercarving right before Christmas, and didn’t get around to handling them until mid-late February. Since then, I’ve used them almost exclusively to rough out everything I have carved as a test of their quality. I really enjoy them, and running about $23 per blade, I’ve been pretty impressed with them.
I’ve mainly been using the knife with the ebonized ash handle. The spine on the one with the walnut handle is pretty squared off and uncomfortable on push and assisted cuts. I can take care of that by rounding it over with a file or sand paper, and my mistakes on handle design didn’t help it out either. Once I take care of these points, I know I’ll have two knives I’m really happy to use.
If you are new to carving and want an affordable but solid knife, these are just as good, if not a little better, than your standard Mora knives (which are also great). It just might take a little longer to get to your house. I’m thinking about buying a handful more of these and handling them for use in future classes.
